Sure! The flu isn’t just a seasonal annoyance – it can be a serious threat to your health. Every year, millions of people get sick with the flu, and many end up hospitalized or worse. At North Florida Women’s Care, we want to keep you protected, which is why we’re encouraging our patients — especially the pregnant women– to get vaccinated.
Three Reasons You Need a Flu Shot:
- The Flu Can Be Deadly
The CDC estimates that during the 2023–2024 U.S. flu season, there were:- ~40 million illnesses
- ~470,000 hospitalizations
- ~28,000 deaths
- Pregnancy Makes the Flu More Dangerous
Pregnant women are at higher risk of flu-related complications. Last season: 22% of flu hospitalizations among women aged 15–49 were pregnant. Despite the risk, only about 36% of pregnant women were vaccinated by the end of December. Flu can cause serious illness in both the mother and baby—including pneumonia, preterm labor, and fetal distress. - The Flu Shot Works
While not 100% effective, the flu shot significantly reduces your risk of getting the flu or developing severe complications. Even if you do get the flu, your symptoms are typically milder if you’re vaccinated.
What Happens If You Don't Get the Flu Shot?
- You’re more likely to catch the flu — and spread it to others.
- You risk hospitalization — especially if you’re in a high-risk group.
