Get to Know Your Provider – Dr. Jackie Hanners

Can you talk about your background and what inspired you to pursue OBGYN?

I grew up in a small town a couple of hours from Tallahassee with no family background in medicine. Through FSU’s pipeline program, SSTRIDE, I was exposed to the health sciences starting in middle school, which initially sparked my interest in medicine. During my undergraduate years at FSU, I worked as a medical assistant for a local OB/GYN, Dr. Messer, and that experience truly ignited my passion for women’s health. My time at FSU College of Medicine solidified my desire to become an OB/GYN and prepared me for this rewarding career.

Where did you attend medical school?

I completed my medical education right here in Tallahassee at Florida State University College of Medicine. I loved the holistic approach the program provided, and I believe that foundation prepared me well for both my specialty training and my work as a provider today.

Have you noticed a change in patient care or what patients are looking for?

Social media has become much more influential in healthcare conversations. I often have patients asking questions about something they saw on a social platform. While increased access to information can be positive, it also creates opportunities for us to have meaningful discussions about which sources are reliable and what applies to each individual’s unique situation.

Were you ever worried that you chose the wrong field?

Never. I’ve always been drawn to Obstetrics and Gynecology and love advocating for women’s health. This field offers such a beautiful mixture of experiences — it’s incredibly fulfilling to be part of my patients’ journeys throughout each chapter of their lives.

What advice would you give to someone who's afraid to visit their OB/GYN or doesn't think it's a priority?

If you’re feeing afraid: it’s completely okay to have fears about visiting your OB/GYN. I encourage you to voice those concerns to your provider — opening that dialogue helps us address what’s holding you back and work through it together. Ask the questions you’re afraid to ask. that’s what we’re here for. If you don’t think it’s a priority: Your health is always a priority, and that includes routine gynecological care. Whether it’s cervical cancer screenings, breast cancer screenings, or problem-based visits for issues like painful cycles, these appointments are essential to your overall wellbeing.

What's a personal fact you'd love your patients to know?

I’m an avid animal lover. I have two golden retrievers at home, and I will never say no to seeing a photo of your pets!

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

I’m truly happy to be returning to Tallahassee to serve the surrounding community. While I wasn’t originally from here, this city opened its arms to me when I arrived as a young undergraduate students, and I fell in love with its charm. It’s also where I met my husband, and we’re both excited to continue this next chapter of our lives here.
